Show honors Hargreaves' style

The HUB Formal galleries is displaying Specific Landscapes, photographs of landscape architect George Hargreaves' work, until March 30.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture, consists of photos depicting architecture creations from Hargreaves Associates, a landscaping firm located in San Francisco, Ca.

Concentrating on projects designed and built by Hargreaves, the pictures depict Hargreaves' style, which combines landscape architecture skills based on simple designs with the properties of a particular site. Most of his works have been built in the western United States.

Currently projects are being designed or are under construction in the Rocky Mountain region, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, New Mexico, Arizona and in parts of Northern and Southern California. His works have been featured in Architecture Record, Arts and Architecture, Process and the Urban Land Institute Journal.

Kristi Wormhoudt, administrative assistant in the Department of Landscape Architecture said that every year the department sponsors the John R. Bracken Lecture Series for which Hargreaves is a speaker. She said the department learned about the exhibit from Harvard University, where it originated. The Graduate School of Design there asked if the University would be interested in displaying Hargreaves' work, and the University readily accepted.

Hargreaves received a bachelor degree in landscape architecture from, the University of Georgia in 1977. He received a masters degree in landscape architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 1979. His past experience includes working for The SWA Group in Sausalito, California and the Cheshire Design Group in Chester, England.
