Increase wages
I am writing in lieu of the recent proposal for new legislation to raise the minimum wage. I want to commend any Congressman who would vote in favor of this new proposal. Today, businesses are receiving much needed labor, mostly from college students, for only $3.35 an hour. This labor is being fulfilled at an extremely inexpensive cost to a business, and that business is making a nice profit because of it. Would an increase in the minimum wage to $4.65 really cut into a business' profits so deeply that it would have to hire less people? I do not think so. For a part-time employee who worked 10 hours during a week, it would only cost a business an additional thirteen dollars in salaries to that employee. As college students, we all know that trying to earn money for college is difficult. I feel that I, the employee, need the extra thirteen dollars more than a business needs it. I would commend all Congressmen and the President if they would be willing to go against big business and support the younger generation of this country with their need for better paying jobs. This new minimum wage proposal is the best way to create better paying jobs. Michael H. McGuire
