Furious
Have you seen it? It airs during prime time television. I saw it last week and am furious about it. It has to do with the fact that in just a few months the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision which gave women the right to a safe and legal abortion may be overturned. The decision, indeed, the very issue, promises to be one of the most controversial in history. President Bush claims he wants to know how the American public feels about this most important issue. It all seems like a good idea. There's a 900 number and the only thing a person has to do is dial/push seven digits for Yes -- Roe v. Wade should be reversed, or No -- Roe v. Wade should not be reversed. Simple. And it only costs $2 to register your vote. I think we need to recognize who will be most affected if Roe v. Wade is reversed this summer. Men? It rarely is. Upper-class women? I doubt it. For a price, these women can find a doctor somewhere who can be bribed to break the law and perform a safe abortion. The fact is that the people who will be most affected if the right to a safe and legal abortion is taken away are poor women and women of color. Ideally, these women, if they are 18 or older, are guaranteed a voice, but President Bush is missing one very important point: Can the women who will be most affected by a reversal of Roe v. Wade afford to throw away $2 to register a phone vote. Moreover, do all women have phones or televisions. If the President intends to use the results of this not-so-random survey as a basis for his decision, perhaps he should review his history books. Did Dewey really beat Truman? Kelli L. Myers
