Collegian board to select new business manager

Collegian Staff Writer

The Collegian Inc. Board of Directors will select a new Daily Collegian business manager tonight for a one-year term beginning April 28.

Each of the three candidates for the position will undergo 20-minute interviews with the board. The board will then meet in a closed session and move to the Collegian office in Carnegie Building to announce the new manager.

Interviews begin at 7:30 at the Sheraton Penn State, 240 S. Pugh St., and are open to the public.

The candidates include current office manager Robert Gavazzi (sophomore-cable/broadcast), senior office representative Jennifer Grimm (senior-general arts and science) and sales representative Michael Peterson (sophomore-business administration).

Collegian Assistant General Manager Patti Hartranft said anyone on the business staff of the newspaper was invited to apply for the position. Each applicant submitted with his or her application a cover letter, statement of purpose, transcript and resume.

Hartranft said the board probably will look for leadership and knowledge of operations of the business division in its selection.

The business manager runs the business division of the newspaper by overseeing its five departments: accounting, office, sales, layout and marketing. They also handle such duties as advertising contracts and customer complaints, current Business Manager Jan Miller said. The manager also sits on the board of directors, which sets policy for the overall operation of the company and selects the editor-in-chief and business manager.

Miller said the most satisfying part of the job has been seeing the business staff members grow and improve themselves over the course of a year. Miller said she spends about 20 to 27 hours a week at the Collegian.

"Take things as they come and never forget what type of opportunity lies in this position," Miller advised her successor. After graduation, Miller plans to take a summer job working on her family's farm.
