The men's lacrosse team is young, but that doesn't stop it from scoring goals.
The team scored a total of 21 goals this weekend on its way to winning the Penn State Indoor Invitational. Freshmen and sophomores accounted for 13 scores.
The team beat Notre Dame, 9-1, Saturday and Nazareth, 12-10, last night at Holuba Hall for its third championship in the three year history of the tournament.
Nazareth advanced to last night's final with a win over last year's runner-up, Lehigh, and looked strong in the first quarter of the championship, scoring four unanswered goals against a frustrated Penn State team.
"I was pleased with the intensity level," Penn State Coach Glenn Thiel said, "but nothing was falling our way."
The second quarter was an entirely different story. Penn State midfielders Scott Bailer and Tim Conway dominated face-offs while an aggressive defense, led by Paul Gilhool, held down Nazareth's attack.
Sophomore midfielder Jim Laverty started the scoring two minutes into the quarter, converting on a combination of a defender who was one step too slow, and a nicely placed pass from John Hollerbach. One minute later, Hollerbach cut Nazareth's lead to 4-2 with a shot that whistled over goalie Dana Ryan's right shoulder.
Bailer, a freshman, won the ensuing face-off, which began a textbook fast break that resulted in Ted Peddy's first of three goals. Only eight seconds had elapsed since Hollerbach's score.
Senior Steve Graves joined the fun four minutes later when he beat his man one-on-one and scored to tie the game, 4-4, and to wake up Nazareth's offense.
Nazareth's Bill Coons and Penn State's Joel Brouse traded goals to make the score 5-5 before Nazareth's Bill Atkinson scored his second of four goals to give Nazareth a 6-5 lead at the half.
Penn State took an 8-6 lead in the third quarter after an onslaught of scoring. Hollerbach, Peddy and Graves all scored within a span of 53 seconds.
Atkinson and Coons combined for a pair of Nazareth goals to tie the game at eight, but Penn State regained the lead when senior Tim Conway scored with 39 seconds remaining to close out the scoring in the third quarter.
After Conway, Peddy and Brous scored to make the score 12-8, Nazareth started to mount a comeback with two goals, but ran out of time.
Thanks to an excellent goaltending effort from freshman Jamie Morse, Penn State never had to look back in Saturday night's 9-1 victory over Notre Dame. Morse was beaten once in the first quarter but managed to spoil any hopes the Fighting Irish had of coming back from a 3-1 Penn State lead at the first intermission.
Freshman Greg Guarton scored just 43 seconds into the game and assisted on a goal by Brous four minutes later to give the Lions all they would need.
"Greg is a great position player," Laverty said. "He always seems to be in the right place at the right time."
Laverty scored twice in Saturday's game and had the only multiple goal effort.
