When dormitory students elect their area government leaders Wednesday, in many cases they will have just one, or no candidates to choose from.
"In some areas, I'm really happy because there's a lot of competition," said Janet Cary, assistant elections commissioner for the Undergraduate Student Government, adding that she did not know why students in some areas have more interest in student government than others.
This year, West Halls has competition for every government position, but students from other areas such as Centre Halls - which has one candidate for president and no vice presidential candidate - have less of a selection.
Students will vote for their area president, vice president and two Association of Residence Hall Student representatives in each area, she said. Depending on the area constitution, students may also vote for treasurer, secretary and Residence Hall Advisory Board representatives, she said. In some areas, these positions are appointed by executives, she said.
In East, South, and Pollock halls, the presidential and vice presidential candidates run separately, Cary said. Candidates for the positions in North, West and Centre halls must run as tickets, she added.
East Halls presidential candidates are Darryl Bundrige and Jim Kimmel.
"I will offer activities and services that are entertaining and valuable . . . I will be receptive to the needs, requests and ideas of residents," Bundrige said in his platform statement. He said he also hopes to improve facilities for his area.
Kimmel said in his statement, "I would like to work with the other individual East Halls organizations to form a union for students in order to provide (residents) with programs which will both educate and entertain."
The vice-presidential candidates are Andrew Dremann and Sharyn Jacob.
Dremann said he would like to "increase the number and quality of social and developmental programs, to expand the services provided by the (East Residence Association), and to increase student awareness and involvement in ERA," according to his statement.
Jacob's statement said she hopes to solve communication problems that she says exist between East Halls government and students, and to increase student participation in area activities.
The treasurer candidate is Denise Haskins and the secretary candidate is Andrea McAlpine. No students are on the ballot for ARHS representative positions.
The Mike Minosky/Andrea Salerno ticket is the only executive ticket in North Halls.
The candidates plan to better relations between resident assistants and the North Halls government. Minosky and Salerno also want "to continue our government's active role in orientation programs, student representation and to protect the rights of North Halls area residents," according to their statement.
Three candidates - Chad Michna, David Glickman and Marsha Pratt - are running for treasurer. The secretary race pits Helen Lewandowski against James Pisarski. The sole candidate for the ARHS position is Jeff Teuteberg, and no one is running for the two RHAB positions.
James Blew and Bobby Zoldos are vying for South Halls president. Frank Keally and Cynthia Rominiecki are the vice-presidential candidates.
Although South Halls executives do not run as tickets, Blew and Keally issued a joint statement of their plans for the area. "I can't think of anything, but if the residents of South Halls feel that change is necessary, we'd be more than happy to see what we can do."
Zoldos said, "Simply put, I will make our central area livable and on the same level as all the other halls."
Colleen McCarty is the only candidate for the two South Halls ARHS positions and there are no candidates for the two RHAB positions.
Sean Devlin and Jeff Wanner are running as a ticket against Eugene Pfeiffer and David Woodman for the top executive positions in West Halls.
Devlin and Wanner's platform includes "cutting down on false fire alarms, expanding the post office hours, and improving the lighting in the quad."
The Pfeiffer/Woodman ticket hopes to lower copier prices the week before and the week during final exams. They also plan to sponsor more monthly activities, such as road trips and movies.
Four candidates are running for the two ARHS positions: Sheldon Mayo, Cheryl Price, Noelle Shiner and Vicki Wetzel.
Christine Becker and Sherri Shields are both on the presidential ballot in Pollock Halls. Meri Staymates is the only candidate for vice president.
"I will try to build our area treasury by implementing more fundraisers, provide more monthly social events and bring more campus-wide programs to the Pollock-Nittany area," according to Becker's candidacy statement.
"I will work toward increased student involvement and better representation of all residents of the Pollock/Nittany Area," according to Shields' candidacy statement.
Mike Santo is the only candidate for treasurer and Wendy Forrest is the sole candidate for secretary. The candidates for the two ARHS positions are Tim Shriver and Gerard Louison. There are no candidates for the two RHAB positions.
Although Centre Hall executives run as tickets, Craig Group is the only presidential candidate and the vice presidential ballot is blank. Four candidates are contending for the two ARHS positions: Tracey Bey, Lisa Freedman, Kathy Rickabaugh and Janet Ennis.
