GSA's Martin seeks second presidential term

Collegian Staff Writer

Graduate Student Association President Ken Martin will run unopposed for a second term in office during GSA elections tomorrow night.

Available positions outnumber the nominees for the elections, which will take place at 7:15 tomorrow night in 101 Kern during the regular GSA Assembly meeting. Only delegates are permitted to vote.

All graduate students are eligible to run for an office, Martin said, noting that students must file an intent to run form in the GSA office to be included on the ballot. However, nominations also will be taken during the meeting on a write-in basis, he said.

By late yesterday afternoon, one person had been nominated for each of the executive positions. Four students who filed intend to run for the five positions of Graduate Council representatives, while two others are running for four Faculty Senate positions.

Martin said he expects some late entries to supplement the candidates who have already declared their intent to run, adding that the lack of nominees at this time is disappointing yet characteristic for GSA elections.

-- Martin, who has also served on the body as executive secretary and delegate, announced his candidacy for re-election March 7. No other students have yet entered the presidential race.

"It's not a sure-fire way of getting publicity if that's what you want," Martin said, citing the difference between GSA elections and the heated competition for Undergraduate Student Government positions.

However, Martin said he would rather see more students competing for positions. "If you don't have any competition, then your vision will get narrower."

Martin said he does not plan to campaign, but cited his experience as one of his qualifications for the position. "I just may have a few more contacts," he said, adding "I am hopeful that we can make some changes and make some progress. "

The president appoints the executive vice president, division heads and committee chairs and represents the group on the University Student Advisory Board.

-- Michael Cawley (graduate-psychology), GSA delegate and member of the judiciary committee, is a candidate for administrative vice president. "I think it's important that we have people to help their fellow students," Cawley said. "I think I can put in the time that's needed."

If elected, Cawley said, he wants to increase the representation of minority students in GSA due to the large number of foreign graduate students. He said GSA should also increase support for the Campaign for Penn State in its drive to raise funds for the Graduate School. The Campaign for Penn State is a six-year effort to raise $300 million for University programs.

The vice president's duties include chairing GSA assemblies and representing the body on USAB.

-- Frank Miskiel (graduate-plant physiology), current treasurer, is running for re-election. He has held his position for the past three years.

Miskiel was unavailable for comment.

-- Jeff Borkowski (graduate-nuclear engineering) is running for re-election as executive secretary.

"I would prefer to see these elections contested," Borkowski said, adding that competition would indicate student interest.

Borkowski said the primary difference between GSA and USG is that GSA is more service-oriented than issue-oriented, citing the recent tax workshop and upcoming Graduate Fair, both sponsored by GSA. "If GSA hadn't organized something like that, then it wouldn't have gotten organized."

-- Nominees for Faculty Senate seats are David White (graduate-veterinary science) and Robert Jenkins (graduate-business administration).

-- Competitors for five available Graduate Council representative posts are Scott Sabol (graduate-civil engineering), Esther Forti (graduate-health education), Robert Gould (graduate-nuclear engineering) and Beth Jones (graduate-higher education).
