Fashion show highlights springwear

Collegian Staff Writer

Contrast was the style unveiled for spring at the third annual benefit fashion show last night sponsored by the Penn State Marketing Association and Phi Chi Theta, a professional business fraternity.

The show was divided into two segments: Casual wear and business wear.

For play time, bold colors and patterns dominated the outfits. Hot pink and deep blue, among other colors, prevailed during the casual wear section.

Business time became a moment of elegance with subtle patterns and colors that exuded professionalism.

"It was an extremely exciting and energetic program," said John Rhoads, president the Penn State Marketing Association, adding that his organization regularly sponsors benefits.

The show raised about $250 for the Easter Seals Society of Centre County, said Jill Havira, who co-coordinated the show with Phi Chi Theta President Carol Stemlach.

"We felt that if we had a local charity, it would generate more interest from the community and perhaps get more sponsors and participants," Stemlach said. "Besides, with two weeks before Easter we thought that (the Easter Seals Society) was appropriate."

The money raised by the fashion show will probably be used to further a pre-school integration program currently being developed, said Brenda Werner, a representative of the Easter Seals Society. The program is starting to integrate disabled children into regular pre-schools.

"It gives people an inexpensive night out and gives everyone, especially seniors, a chance to see what fashion is like in the business world," she said.

The two groups started work on the show last semester, Havira said. The stores that participated in the show included Benetton, 200 W. College Ave., Gia Gia, 213 Calder Way, Hair Loft by Charles, 512 E. College Ave., Tailored Woman and the Young Men's Shop, 216 Calder Way. Greyhound and Mellon Bank also sponsored the show.

"Overall, I felt that the show was a success," said Jennifer Santoleri, a member of the Penn State Marketing Association and a model in the show. "It was the most enjoyable thing I've ever done for charity."
