D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince cancel Rec Hall rap concert

Illness will keep D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince from rocking Rec Hall this Sunday, Macrina Martin, University Concert Committee advisor, said yesterday.

The concert, which is the final event in Ebony and Ivory week, will not be rescheduled.

UCC was notified on Tuesday that the Fresh Prince is ill and will not be able to perform, Martin said. Sickness is a legal cancellation of a performance contract.

"We're upset about the cancellation but we've got to move quickly to get money back," Martin said.

Ticket refunds will be conducted at the Eisenhower Auditorium South box office during regular business hours, today and tomorrow between 9 and 4. Students must present tickets and student identification to receive a refund, Martin said.

Less than 1,000 show tickets were sold, Martin said. Because this is a relatively low number, ticket refunds should run smoothly, she said.

Martin said the concert cannot be rescheduled for a number of reasons: UCC is planning another concert in two weeks; DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince are not on an official tour; Rec Hall might not be available in the upcoming weeks, and there are traditional big events planned for the next few months that the concert committee does not want to interfere with.

"We're bitterly disappointed about the cancellation of the show. We're going to have to re-do a lot of things that we've done, we're going to be doing a lot of un-doing," Martin said. "We had T-shirts made up and caterers have already made food," she added.

David Kershner, co-chairman of Ebony and Ivory Week, said he wishes another concert could be scheduled, but time restraints make that impossible.

"Sunday was going to climax this weekend's events, which feature a series of workshops and seminars all-day Saturday in the HUB," said Kershner, who chairs the event for his fraternity, Beta Sigma Beta, 255 E. Fairmont Ave. "It would have been a great culmination to a great week."

UCC spent about three weeks planning the concert and playing up publicity, said UCC Chairman Michael Cronmiller. Despite the UCC's hard work, Cronmiller directed his sympathies toward the participants in the Ebony and Ivory celebration.

"I feel bad because there were a lot of people planning to end the week with this event," Cronmiller said. "It is a shame it had to be cancelled."

This will not be UCC's last event of the semester, however. Cronmiller said UCC will bring Elvis Costello to campus on April 2. Ticket sales will be announced at a later date, he added.

Some ticket holders who were expecting to rock to the beat of D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince voiced their disappointment yesterday.

Belinda Crosby (sophomore-education) said she had hoped to see her former Overbrook High classmate, D.J. Jazzy Jeff, in Rec Hall this weekend.

"I am really disappointed. We were just talking about going in our last class," her friend, Michelle Long (sophomore-education) said. "I can't believe they are not coming."

"We don't get a lot of rap concerts up here so I was really looking forward to seeing Jazzy Jeff -- I was psyched to hear 'Parents Just Don't Understand,' said Kelli Howie (sophomore-international politics). "Oh well, it's like that and that's the way it is," she added.
