Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity made significance out of trivia Saturday when it raised more than $1,000 for the Centre County Office of the Aging with its first annual sports trivia bowl.
"This is a chance for a fraternity and the community to do something together," said Mike Genesio, chancellor of Tau Epsilon Phi, 328 E. Foster Avenue.
Thirty teams of three to five players competed in the bowl. Entry fees were $25 and participants received T-shirts provided by Bud Light.
The Surf Club, 128 E. College Ave., donated a percentage of sales from certain drinks sold Feb. 28 and March 1 to the trivia bowl, said Marc Ganz, a co-chairman for the bowl.
The first and second place teams, the "Mega Powers" and the "British Knights" received trophies. The top placed fraternity team, Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, which placed third, also received a trophy.
Ganz and Jeffrey Beam, another co-chairman, said they did not anticipate such an enthusiastic response.
"We had to turn teams away because we only had planned for 25 teams," Ganz said. "As it stands now, we will have it again next year."
Tau Epsilon Phi is the first fraternity to donate money to the center, said Jane Taylor, service management supervisor at the Centre County Office of the Aging.
"Other fraternities and sororities have donated services like leaf raking to us, not money," she said. "But that's as good as money because we would have had to pay someone to do it anyway."
"The money we receive will help to extend the programs we already have operating," Taylor said.
"I think that it's a great idea," Taylor said. "It gives folks a chance to get involved in the community. Trivia becomes not so trivial when there's a good cause."
Some of the services that will benefit from the donation include the Home Delivery Meals program and other recreational activities at the individual centers, such as hiking clubs, education and craft programs, Taylor said.
