Congrats in order
This year's IFC Dance Marathon was a tremendous success, raising a recordbreaking $456,000 for children with cancer. Overall chairman Jonathon Ferrara and his committees deserve to be richly congratulated. However, the marathon could not have been nearly as successful were it not for the contributions of three organizations, who together were responsible for raising over 50 percent of the marathon's total. As was mentioned in Monday's Collegian, Alpha Sigma Phi/Alpha Sigma Alpha raised over $112,000 of this. The Collegian failed to recognize Pi Kappa Phi/Alpha Chi Omega, who raised an amazing $90,000 and Kappa Delta Rho/Delta Delta Delta, who contributed $67,000. All of these incredible amounts are the result of a lot of hard work and dedication that deserve some recognition. As a chairman of the Alpha Sigma Phi/ASA team, it was nice to see our accomplishment mentioned in the Collegian on Monday (2/20), even if the mention was only one sentence long. However, I was very disappointed and shocked to see that the other two teams were not even mentioned. The work that our teams put into Dance Marathon could make a fascinating story in itself. Our work for the marathon lasts much longer than 48 hours; we work from September through February organizing, talking to businesses, writing letters, visiting Hershey Medical Center, holding motivational meetings, and travelling across the state to collect money for the kids. The amount of work that goes into raising over $100,000 for a charity is incredible. One of the ways we motivate our members is by convincing them of the importance of our work. We know that the money we raise goes to a very important and worthy cause, and that our work can greatly affect the lives of young cancer victims and their families. However, how can we continue to convince members that our hard work and sacrifice is important when it is all diminished to one sentence -- a sentence that completely excludes two organizations who raised well over one third of this year's marathon total. We don't get involved in this event for recognition -- we do it for the kids. However, if our three organizations' involvement is continually brushed aside and treated lightly by the press, it will be easy for our members to start treating it lightly also. And in the end, the Marathon and the kids will suffer. Karen Miller
