Get to roots
The recent demonstrations on campus and in town have caught my attention and have been a topic of discussion in a number of my classes. I believe in their cause and feel that all human beings are equal and should be treated as such. I do not believe, however, that the course of action presently being taken will provide lasting effects. The protesting group on campus seems to believe that increasing awareness in our campus community is the best course. Won't this only produce a temporary, if not limited, effect? Don't get me wrong. I know that increasing awareness in our community is very important and should be done, but shouldn't greater emphasis also be placed upon spreading the message to a younger age-group? Educating children in elementary schools about racism and discrimination is one way to reduce the formation of racist ideals at their roots. So why not initiate a campaign to educate the younger age-group in our community? It will probably show greater results in the long run. After all, to kill a weed one must get to the roots!
