Accurate Account
I have taken this week to read the articles in the Centre Daily Times and The Collegian about racism at Penn State. Jurgen K. Tappe, a junior in the English Department, wrote what I consider to be an accurate account of the recent racist events. I firmly believe public opinion is going against the protesters and their cause. Integration, not segregation, right? I for one do not consider singing the "Black National Anthem" and remaining silent during the U.S. National Anthem a unifying act. Unifying for African-Americans, but not for Americans whose support they are trying to gain. After reading Susannah Rausch's statement that an escort has never attacked a person, I feel the formation of Ebony Escorts is inappropriate. I disagree with Chuck Banks' claim that Ebony Escorts is a necessary service. What would be wrong with the thirtyfive black escorts joining the Student Escort Service? If a student called with a racial prejudice against a white male walking her home, then she could request a black escort. Granted this is racist on the part of the female, but better to have a united effort to escort students than a segregated effort. (Nothing is wrong with black escorts walking a white female home, this would encourage friendships between black and white members of the student community.) If every attack between a black and white, whether it is a robbery, mugging, murder, rape, verbal assault, or attack, is treated as a racial incident, a race war at Penn State would commence. Let us work toward eliminating racism through open, not closed meetings. I believe we can unite this campus instead of dividing it. Frank Smeeks
