Trackwomen qualify 8 more for Easterns

Collegian Sports Writer

The women's indoor track team turned in eight more ECAC qualifying performances at the Last Chance Invitational held Sunday.

Qualifying for the championships were Dana Conley (fifth, 43' 10½") and Jennifer Lee (sixth, 43' 10") in the 20-pound throw, and Becky Williams (sixth, 9:59.9) in the 3,000-meter run.

The meet was held at George Mason University.

Mary Beth Powers (second, 1:16.62) and Ernestine Marsh (third, 1:16.93) also qualified in the 500-meter run, as well as Pam Connell (fourth, 56.85) and Leslie Hummer (sixth, 57.33) in the 400-meter run. Rounding out the list of qualifiers are Deb Ford in the pentathalon (second, 3,294 points) and Amanda Dudley in the 1,000-meter run (first, 2:56.5).

A sigh of relief was felt by the new qualifiers, for they know now that their indoor season will not be cut short.

"There was a lot of tough competition out there," Dudley said. "I'm just glad to get it (qualifying) out of the way."

The meet also featured other outstanding performances, with Penn State placing well in every event. Michelle Thompson placed second in the 20-pound throw (46' 6"), Emily Haas placed second in the 5,000-meter run (17:56.55) and Carmen Mann won the triple jump (39' 7.½"). Mann also placed second in the 55-meter hurdles with her season's best performance of 8.22 seconds. Also placing well in the hurdles were Connell (third, 8.37) and Shelly Mitchell (fifth, 8.51).

In the mile, Laurie Morrow placed second (5:02.6) and DeAnn Martz took third (5:05.36). Both efforts were season's bests. Teressa DiPerna (third, 2:14.35) and Kiernan O'Toole (fourth, 2:17.99) continued to perform well in the 800-meter run.

Also placing highly were Julie Greenland in the pentathalon (fourth, 3,045 points), Kim Kessell in the shot put (third, 45' 5"), Karen Bill in the 20-pound throw (fourth, 45' 6½"), Jodi Silverman in the 500-meter run (1:20.1) and Jennifer Prutzman in the 1,000-meter run (2:58.7).

"I'm happy that the team has kept improving," Coach Teri Jordan said. "There are a few others that I feel still have a good shot at qualifying."

On February 25 the team will host a Last Chance Invitational of its own at the Greenberg Indoor Sports Complex, where it will have the last shot to qualify for the ECACs.
