Letter to the Editor
Not racist

Enough is enough. After reading about the taking over of the HUB Fishbowl and the stopping of traffic on College Ave, I must raise my concern over the reasons for the African-Americans' protests.

Before you begin labeling me as another of the "racists" you are enraged about, let me assure you that I am as much for equality as anybody. I am a University employee and have NEVER given anyone less service on the basis of their race, gender, or creed.

Given those qualifications, I read the articles with impartiality and I must voice concern about the legitimacy of the racism in the two incidents which have sparked recent protests.

First, there were the racist posters denouncing Seth Williams. I will not deny that the posters cut Williams down for his race. But they did not cut down every African-American at Penn State.

As a white American, I don't take offense if another white-man is cut down for his race or sex. I consider it an isolated incident against that person only, given that his name was included in the attack itself.

Even less warranted, though, was the offense taken by African-Americans at the harassment of five black women downtown by ten white men.

What nobody seems to be considering is that the women were harassed because they were female, not because they were black. Those guys were drunk, and would have treated five white women in the same way.

When the white women resisted as the black women did, many four-letter words would have been thrown, which would have been just as insulting, if not more so, than the racial epithets that were used against the black women.

However, I don't see women-activists marching as a result of this incident. Why?

The reason for this letter is that I really do support the cause of the African-American movement. I would love to see racism disappear from Penn State.

But I want to make the protesters aware that I am not the only person at the University who sees little reason for the current demonstrations.

Unfortunately, situations like this where people see little reason to sympathize with the protesters usually result in public opinion going against the protesters and their cause.

Please don't ruin your own chances for equality at Penn State.
