Letter to the Editor
Support rally
Recently on campus we've seen well-publicized events of racial intolerance. A university community exists to pursue knowledge and respect for human dignity and diversity and, because of this, all students should be alarmed at the ignorance and maliciousness which is surely at the root of such bigoted actions. We, the members of the University Student Advisory Board to President Jordan, are tired of these illegal and immoral acts. We are tired of letting a small prejudiced population of this community set the tone for Penn State with these atrocities, some of which are a blatant attempt to gain media exposure for pretty twisted ideas. It's time that we, all members of the University community, took a stand and let those who would cause misery to others know that the Penn State community will not tolerate prejudiced and intolerant attitudes here. These acts of intolerance are not isolated. They are not only of a racial nature. Everyday, lesbian and gay students are victims of hateful and illegal harassment and bigotry. Women are accosted and raped. International and Jewish students are the targets of abuse by close-minded and thoughtless actions. Members of other underrepresented groups are victims, as well. If you, like us, are tired of these acts, if you are pursuing an education so that you can better society, if you believe that in the United States, every man and woman is equal and has a right to enjoy a safe life free of malicious actions then join us today, from noon to 1:00 on the Old Main lawn to let the prejudiced among us hear that the majority of people in this community will not stand for ignorant attacks on innocent people. Please come join us -- the time is now to let your voice be heard. R. Seth Williams
