Letter to the Editor
Save the earth
I found it difficult to ignore Ira Sasowsky's letter about recycling. Mr. Sasowsky is a graduate in geo-science so he should know what he's talking about. I made a hasty assumption. Mr. Sasowsky states all the disadvantages of separating garbage into recycling categories. He says that recycling saves the University a trivial amount of money and that there is not an overall shortage of landfill space. He says that recycling is an inconvenience for the American way of life and takes too much effort. Well, Mr. Sasowsky, I agree with you on one thing -- the American way of life is based on convenience and laziness. Recycling is necessary because society is wasting the earth. We like throwaway glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans and newspapers. Once used, if not recycled, these materials are melted down into unusable material. If we don't start mandatory recycling, we will not have the materials to support our lifestyle. It is not important how little money Penn State can save from recycling its waste; money is not the issue. It is important that we are saving the earth from becoming barren of natural resources.
