Lynch elected IFC president; expresses desire to increase fraternity council participation

Collegian Staff Writer

The Interfraternity Council elected three new executive officers last night at the council's regular meeting held at Beta Theta Pi fraternity, 220 N. Burrowes Road.

Fraternity representatives voted Tom Lynch, previous IFC chapter programs chairman, to the presidential position in an election closed to the public. Craig Cuyar was elected administrative vice president and Steve Booz will serve as secretary/treasurer.

"The future of IFC looks very promising," said Steve Siegel, outgoing administrative vice president, adding the candidates provided tough competition.

"I feel confident that the fraternity system can move forward this year," Lynch said.

The new officers will be officially inducted into their positions March 20, said current IFC President Rod Hutter. The upcoming weeks will be a transition period for the council, Hutter said, adding outgoing officers will work closely with the new council.

"I hope they come to me for a resource," he said, adding, "I'm devoted to the IFC."

Lynch expressed a desire to increase individual fraternity involvement with the council.

"I would like to have an IFC where everyone would have a chance to participate more," Lynch said. "It is very exciting to be working with the fraternity presidents."

Promoting a positive image of the Greek system is an important goal, Cuyar said, adding he wants the system to develop "a sound working relationship with the State College borough."

"I have a lot of positive ideas," he said.

Appointed officers will be selected following spring break, Hutter said. The council's appointed positions include executive vice president, board of control chairman, membership chairman, community relations chairman, University relations chairman and chapter programs chairman.

Attempts to reach Booz for comments last night were unsuccessful because he was not available.
