SUB offers alternatives in free student entertainment tonight

Collegian Arts Writer

Polish up the one-liners and dig out the old jokebooks. The Student Union Board is looking for a few good comedians to compete in the U.S. College Comedy Competition at 8 p.m. Feb. 21 in Schwab Auditorium.

Gerard Louison, SUB chairman of special events, said the competition will involve 20 to 25 contestants who will each perform a three-minute monologue. Video tapes of contestants will be sent to judges and one winner will be selected from colleges in the northeast region.

The winner from this region will compete in the national competition in Daytona Beach, Fla., which will be hosted by comedian Jerry Seinfeld.

SUB will also sponsor a Gong Show at 8 p.m. March 23 in the HUB Ballroom. The competition is open to individuals or groups who will have three to five minutes to perform.

"They can be as zany as they want as long as they are not vulgar," Louison said. "Anything goes after that."

Musical accompaniment will be provided by the band Mainstay, and prizes will be awarded for the three best individual and group performances. First place prize for individual competition is a $100 gift certificate from the Campus Bookstore. First place prize for group competition is a free hot tub rental. Judges for the competition are Jim Martin (senior-pre-med), Steve Wisniewski (senior-marketing) and Robert Mitchell (professor of pre-med).

Board president Julie Kaszycki is expecting a great response to the event, which she calls "a campus premiere".

"I hope people reduce their inhibitions and go for it," she said. "Don't be shy."

Louison is hoping these events will make students aware of other SUB-sponsored activities.

"It promotes our organization and urges everyone to come out and see what we represent" he said.
