Trackmen clobber Shippensburg

Collegian Sports Writer

The men's track and field team broke one record and recorded a second-best time during a home meet against Shippensburg on Friday.

The Lions defeated Shippensburg, 104-21.

"The meet gave us what we wanted, the chance to compete against outstanding athletes," Shippensburg Coach Paul Kaiser said. "We didn't do well pointwise but our triple jumpers had a good day."

The distance medley team of Aidan O'Reilly (1:55.5), Eric Steenstra (51.5), Ken Frazier (3:01.7) and Brian Laird (4:12.7) broke the old field house record of 10:04.3 with a time of 10:01.61 in the Greenberg Indoor Sports Complex.

The distance medley consists of an 880-yard run, 440-yard run, 3/4 -mile run and the mile run, consecutively.

Doug Walter ran the second best field house time of 2:11.89 in the 1,000-yard run, coming very close to breaking the record of 2:11.44. Walter's time was a personal best in the event.

Walter said Mark Anderson, who finished second in a time of 2:11.94, set the pace.

"It just turned into a race at the end," Walter said.

Lion Chris Mills placed third in the event with a time of 2:15.16.

Bob Gifford placed first in the 55-meter dash in 6.66 seconds. Second and third places went to Penn State's Marshall Cannon (6.67) and Kevin Wiley (6.72).

Penn State also took the first three places in the 55-meter high hurdles -- Sam Harris in 7.58, Eric Steenstra in 7.91 and Jeff King in 7.92.

Bob Gifford (23.39) finished first in the 200-yard run. Marshall Cannon placed second with a time of 23.78.

First place in the mile run went to Lion Jay Novak in a time of 4:20.76.

Jon Strange (51.52) and Kevin Wiley (52.39) placed first and second in the 440-yard run.

Jim Lebo of Shippensburg finished first in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:58.86. From the start of the race, Lebo ran in the wrong lane, hindering Lion Dave Welch. Lebo started the race with a stagger and then ran in the lane toward the inside of the track.

"I held him off for the first two turns, but he had too much of a head start," Welch said.

Greg Large finished the race in a time of 1:16.93 for third place.

In the 880-yard run the Lions took the top two places. Pat Lawrence was first in 2:00.96 and Mark Taylor second in 2:00.97.

Randy Lowe from Shippensburg placed first in the two-mile run. His time of 9:19.06 is his personal best in that event, Kaiser said.

Penn State's one-mile relay team of Welch, Large, Wiley and Jon Strange finished in 3:30.22 over Shippensburg's 3:45.43 for first place.

The pole vault also saw Lions Tom Kleban and Mark Algeri take first and second place, each with heights of 16 feet.

Tim Webb's jump of 6' 6 3/4" in the high jump earned him first place. Tom Kleban and Barry Walsh both jumped 6' 4 3/4" for second and third places.

Michael Timpson took first place in the long jump with a jump of 24' 8". In the triple jump Ricardo Hall was first with 48' 6" and Tim Webb's 45' 6 1/2 " put him in second place.

In the shot put, C.J. Hunter tossed for 61' 10" and took first place. Phil Caraher's toss of 54' 1/2" placed him second.

For Penn State the meet gave individual athletes another chance to qualify for the IC4A Championships; it also gave some athletes who usually do not compete the opportunity to do so, Coach Harry Groves said.

On Saturday, 19 members of the team traveled to the West Virginia Invitational.

Caraher won the shot put with a toss of 53' 10 1/2". Second place in the pole vault went to Lion Jim Yount, who vaulted for 14 feet even. The high jump was won by Webb with a jump of 6' 7 3/4". Hall won the long jump with a jump of 21' 10" and the triple jump with 48' 4 1/2".

Harris ran a 7.59 in the 55-meter hurdles for second place. The mile run was won by Novak in a time of 4:21.5. Laird won the 3,000-meter run.

The Lions' 3,200-meter relay consisted of Tom Green (1:58.7), Pat Primerano (2:00.4), Marc Taylor (1:58.1) and Pat Lawrence (1:59.3). The team ran for second place in an overall time of 7:56.57.
