For freshman Susan Robinson, this season has been one of continuous achievement. Robinson has scored in double figures in 23 consecutive games, put together double figures in points and rebounds 11 times, and has been the Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Week five times.
And in Saturday night's 88-68 win over Rhode Island, Robinson secured a place in the Lady Lion record books. Robinson scored 23 points against the Wrams to give her 429 on the season, breaking Suzie McConnell's freshman scoring record of 415 points. McConnell set the season scoring record last year with 682 points.
"I was aware (of the record)," guard Dana Eikenberg said. "I knew it was around the corner. But you wouldn't hear anything about the record from Susan. She's not the kind of person who would say anything about that. She's just a great person."
And more records may fall by the wayside if Robinson keeps dominating her opponents. Robinson grabbed seven rebounds against Rhode Island to push her season total to 218, 50 behind Kahadeejah Herbert's freshman record of 268 boards set in 1983.
But it was another freshman, Eikenberg, who paced the team to its easy victory. Eikenberg scored a career-high 24 points against the Wrams, including four 3-point shots.
At times this season Eikenberg has struggled from the field, but she has slowly made the transition from shooting guard to point guard. The Lady Lions would certainly love to see Eikenberg keep up her hot outside shooting heading into the last four games of the season and the tournament, when everyone will be concentrating on Robinson and Tanya Garner.
"They were in a box-and-one on Tanya, and they left the top of the key wide open," Eikenberg said. "I just happened to be there because that's where I am in the offense. There was no one within five feet of me, so I pulled up and shot.
"I look to shoot when its there," she said. "But my main objective is still getting the ball to Susan and Tanya and Adrie (DeVries), and I like running the offense."
"Dana has had a great change the last four games," Coach Rene Portland said. "She scored 30-plus points in high school and at Penn State we've asked her to be a team player and to be the quarterback of the offense. Lately she's been fitting right into the offense."
The win raised the team's record to 11-12 overall and 9-5 in the Atlantic 10. Combined with West Virginia's 84-68 loss to league-leader St. Joseph's, the victory over Rhode Island lifts the Lady Lions into sole possession of fourth place in the conference. If the Lady Lions can hold onto fourth place they would play their first tournament game at Rec Hall, an advantage Portland has emphasized all season.
The Lady Lions had a bit tougher time with Rhode Island on Saturday than they did on Jan. 14, when they clobbered the Wrams 92-48. This time, Penn State cruised to a 48-28 halftime lead, but the Wrams made a bit of a run through the first nine minutes of the second half, narrowing the deficit to 59-50.
But the outside shooting of Eikenberg and the inside scoring from Robinson proved too much for the Wrams. The Lady Lions outscored Rhode Island 29-18 the rest of the way to put the game away for good. The loss dropped the Wrams' record to a miserable 3-20 overall and 1-13 in the conference.
With a two-game win streak in tow, the Lady Lions will face a much stiffer test than Massachusetts or Rhode Island on Thursday when they meet Temple at Rec Hall. The Lady Owls beat Penn State 79-74 on Jan. 26 in Philadelphia and are currently second in the A-10 behind St. Joseph's.
