Joining ranks
I would like to say something about the anti-racism march that took place in front of the HUB 2-16. As I walked up toward it I could here the voices getting louder. I stood to the side and watched for several minutes, feeling a longing, kind of, to join in. But I'm Anglo-Saxon. And I don't think I've ever felt the kind of communion of people that I believe I witness in the Afro-Americans. So I walked away after mumbling a pitiful sounding, "go for it." And I felt like a coward. I got all the way to College Ave. before I turned around and went back, asking a girl if I could join. She smiled and said "sure." I walked around in a circle for about 10 minutes and tried to say things like, "Our people, united, will never be defeated!" with the conviction and rhythm of those around me. I felt very out of place. But there's something in this fight (and it's not romantic) that I think we all need to stand up for -- especially if you have to feel a little uncool for it. So at the risk of sounding corny. I just want to say that I admire those people who initiated the renewed discussion of racism at Penn State and I want to apologize for my hesitancy in joining in. Let's just hope that we can apply these principles that we speak of to our everyday lives Emilie Mitcham
