Letter to the Editor
Resolute in efforts

I should like to reiterate statements I made last week regarding the racial incidents that occurred on and off of the University Park campus last weekend.

We join with the African American students and others in the town/gown community who are expressing dismay and disgust at the actions of those responsible for perpetuating racist acts and slurs against Penn State students.

The incidents of last weekend involving intimidation of five black women students and posting of racist posters have shocked and concerned all of us.

As the events of the week unfolded, I have been encouraged by the important and intensified dialogue taking place where blacks and whites, students and administrators, citizens and community leaders, are united against the common enemies of bigotry and racism.

We are resolute in our effort to oppose and prevent them, wherever they occur, for we simply cannot and will not tolerate an environment where any of our students feel intimidated.

Finally, it must be noted that statements condemning racism must be supported by the personal commitment of individuals determined to be alert to situations where racism appears and to speak out against it whenever it occurs. Making such a commitment now is essential.

On behalf of the University, I should like to thank all of those who are united in this important commitment to a future all of us will share.

Bryce Jordan
University president
