Trackmen compete against A-10 foes, Shippensburg

Collegian Sports Writer

The men's indoor track team will do double duty this weekend.

At 2 p.m. today the Lions will host the Shippensburg Red Raiders in the Greenburg Indoor Sports Complex, and at 2 p.m. tomorrow they will participate in the West Virginia / Atlantic 10 Invitational in Morgantown.

"The emphasis in the Shippensburg meet and the West Virginia Invitational will be on qualifying more individuals for IC4As and NCAAs," Coach Harry Groves said. "As always, our goal is to place first, but the top priority has to be matching qualifying standards for those post-season events."

Lion competitors in tonight's team-scored meet include shot putter C.J. Hunter, who has thrown for NCAA-qualifying distances in every meet this season, and Michael Timpson in the long jump. Timpson turned in an NCAA-qualifying time in the 55-meter dash last weekend in Florida.

Also featured in today's meet are Tom Kleben and Mark Algeri in the pole vault, Kevin Wiley and Jon Strange in the 440-yard run, Sam Harris in the 60-yard high hurdles and Ricardo Hall in the triple jump.

Wiley, Strange, Hall and Harris also trek to Morgantown tomorrow. Wiley, Strange and Harris, along with Greg Large, will make up the 1,600-meter relay team and Harris will also compete in the 55-meter high hurdles. Hall again competes in the triple jump, an event he did not get to finish last weekend. The team had to leave for the airport before Hall had completed his allowed number of jumps, but he is determined to do well this weekend.

"I'm confident that I can win," Hall said. "If I can get a good jump on Friday, I won't compete Saturday. I've already qualified for the IC4As, but I'm trying to get a better seed."

Also competing for the Lions in tomorrow's meet are Tom Green, Pat Primeano, Marc Taylor and Patrick Lawrence in the 3,200-meter relay, Phil Caraher in the shot put, and Aiden O'Reilly, Eric Steenstra, Ken Frazier and Brian Laird in the distance medley relay, an event in which Groves definitely wants an IC4A-qualifying time.

Frazier broke a school record last weekend in the 3,200-meter run, turning in a time of 8:00.78.

Eric Steenstra, normally a decathlete, is understandably excited about his race. "I'm looking forward to it. I haven't run on relays yet this season," he said. "We have enough quality there, so that even if not all the teams have entered we can do well."

A few of the teams included in the individually-scored meet are Temple, West Virginia, James Madison and Kent State.
