The spotlight will shine on the seniors tomorrow in the men's swimming and diving team's season-ending meet against Boston University in McCoy Natatorium.
Before the team tries for its eighth consecutive win, the seniors will be highlighted in a pre-meet ceremony for the swimming and academic achievements they've accomplished while at Penn State. The meet begins at noon.
Senior Bruce Byrne, a 100-and 200-yard backstroker and 50-yard freestylist, said that he has done better this year than he has in previous years. Looking toward the Eastern Seaboard Championships, he hopes to qualify there for NCAAs in the 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay.
With only two weeks left before Easterns, the team has focused on reaching qualifying times for it; however, they are not entirely overlooking Boston University as a competitive force.
"They're (BU) not as strong depth-wise. There will be some good races with them in certain events," Assistant Coach Janie Brown said. "It'll be a meet to keep us on our toes. It will act as a tune-up, but we can't take them lightly."
The 10 seniors who will be leaving the team are the first team members who have been with Coach Peter Brown the last four years. Sophomore John McKeehen said there has been a tremendous difference between this year's and last year's team.
"The team has really jelled. The seniors have provided a lot of leadership," McKeehen said.
A breaststroker and 400 medley relay qualifier for Easterns, senior Bill Matz, said that the meet will be an exciting one for some of the younger swimmers who will be swimming their last meet of the year.
"As far as dual meets go, I did pretty well. I'd like to try to get one more of my cuts," Matz said of tomorrow's meet.
In the diving area, Coach Craig Brown said that he is looking at the meet as a warm-up for Easterns.
" We really should do well on both boards. (The divers) have finally started getting a little bit of consistency and sharpness," Brown said.
