Pass rezoning
People are always going to oppose change, but without change we wouldn't be here today. We probably still would be under British rule. Things are constantly undergoing change and usually change is for the better. The Hillel building located at 224 Locust Lane is inadequate and needs major repair, which the foundation doesn't have the money allotted for. This building is clearly outdated in appearance by the fraternities around it. By rezoning, the Hillel group can build a building containing a library, a sanctuary (temple), office space, several apartments and enhance the look of the area. No, the Hillel Foundation won't profit from this. Hillel is a non-profit organization, therefore the money that will be generated from the apartments will be used to maintain the building. If anything, the people that belong to Hillel need a place to gather, worship and plan events. Most groups on campus have this and most religious groups have this off campus -- So why can't Hillel have the same? Because of the community's blindness and unsubstantiated assumptions. The building won't cause major problems that aren't already present. Such as parking, traffic, litter and noise. The parking problem has been there, since several fraternities party on the same night. Cars park illegally at the Hillel building and occasionally on the lawn. The traffic is caused by the same factor. The litter is not generated by the Hillel building. It is thrown on the property of Hillel by the surrounding buildings and not vice-versa. The fraternities make more noise than the Hillel building does. Hillel doesn't throw wild parties that get out of hand, nor blare music during such parties. The rezoning should go through because the building that is going to be built is for the benefit of the Hillel group. It is so the Hillel group can have a place to organize events, study, worship and have a place to be proud of! The Borough Council meeting will be Feb. 17 at noon in the Municipal Building on Fraser street. Javier Zighelboim
