Letter to the Editor
Older perspective
Give me a moment to straighten out Kevin Dellicker, that young man in his second semester with his firey statements about a "frivolous" USG (Letters to the Editor, Feb. 13). By pointing to Travis Parchman's dismissal from the University, Kevin felt he had proof that this year's student government leaders are the laughing stock of Penn State. Listen Kevin, you have no idea what you're saying. What makes you think that with less than one year of Penn State under your belt, you can judge a veteran activist like Mr. Parchman? And another thing: Did you "care" enough (as you claim) to be at Mr. Parchman's open hearing? I too was once young and foolish, but four years of good ol' State have taught me to be wary of making wild accusations without the facts. So let me inform you, Kevin, that whether you like Mr. Parchman's methods or not, his protests over the years have done a lot for the student community. For example, you may not be aware of his involvement with the successful struggle to get the University to divest in South Africa. If you had been present for more than one portion of a single year, you would have known better than to say something as silly as, "it's no wonder our student government is not taken seriously." You should have been witness to the truly laughable do-nothing governments of the previous three years before you judge Seth Williams and Co. so unfairly. Once again, whether you like the changes they've made or not, we've seen more action from the administration under two-thirds of Mr. Williams' command than from all those earlier jokesters put together. However, Kevin, I don't want to stop you from writing to the Collegian. Just make sure you have a slight idea of the history. Phillip Staub
