Plans submitted for Atherton St. business bldg.

Preliminary site plans for a commercial building to be built at 724 S. Atherton St. were submitted to the State College Borough Design Review Board yesterday for improvement suggestions.

The proposed building, which will be owned by 724 Associates, will house offices and retailers and will be 40,000 to 45,000 square feet, Zoning Officer Herman Slaybaugh said.

The South Atherton site currently houses several buildings scheduled to be torn down, including a sporting goods store and the Nittany Valley Winery. The same company, 724 Associates, owns and controls those two buildings and others on the site, Slaybaugh said.

The board also examined a set of plans for building additions at 333 E. Prospect Ave., which was submitted for improvement recommendations.

The owner of the property, Dan Jones, wants to add four units to the back of the two apartment houses on the property and connect them, Slaybaugh said.

"We review the plans and recommend ideas and feedback on architectural and aesthetic amenities," he said.

After the applicants revise the plans, they will return with them to the board for further review and possible approval.

The board also awarded a "Focus on Appearance" certificate to the Centre Daily Times for a report written by Eliza Pennypacker that "promoted awareness of aesthetic and architectural issues," Slaybaugh said.

Another certificate was presented to the State College Borough for recent refacing and landscaping work done on the Pugh Street parking garage.
