Letter to the Editor
A fair review
Denise Janssen, in her column "Past and Present" on February 6, 1989, alleges racism in an incident at Dartmouth University. She complains that the editors of the Dartmouth Review were reinstated after participating in the harassment of a black professor. Given the hypocrisy of the Dartmouth administration, reinstatement was the only choice. For example, radical women's rights protestors showered symbolic blood-stained tampons upon the Dartmouth campus and received no disciplinary action. Black activists occupied university buildings in the name of civil rights yet received no punishment. In light of these precedents, can a suspension be warranted in the Dartmouth Review case? Ms. Janssen also failed to mention what spurred the alleged harassment of the black professor. William Cole, the professor involved, teaches a music history class. Cole felt that it was within the realm of music history to denigrate women, during class time, by referring to their reproductive organs in the most vile terms imaginable. Cole's music history class was also used as a sounding board for his complaints against the white race. He often referred to whites as "honkies," also during class time. When students complained to the editors of the Dartmouth Review of Cole's in-class conduct, an article was written and a confrontation with Cole resulted. To label the actions of the Dartmouth Review and its editors as racist simply because they oppose affirmative action and participated in what was termed a 'vexatious oral exchange" with a black professor with suspect credentials at best is to employ incendiary tactics best suited to the likes of Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan. And for a young college journalist to omit pertinent facts solely to support her cause is inexcusable and in breach of professional ethics. Ron Wagner
