Lite criticism

Having worked on a newspaper, I understand the importance of advertising revenue to a publication. But by printing the Miller Lite "Beachin' Times" supplement last week, you risked offending a large percentage of your readers, including students who are opposed to sexist language and those who abhor irresponsible or underaged drinking.

The supplement included such sexist articles as "How to Scam Babes," as well as slogans like, "Study the three B's of Spring Break . . . Beer, Beach & Babes."

One of the pieces started out, "Name something you can dink, bump and poke. Hint -- It's not a Babe."

All of these images reduce women to an object, something to conquer. This is exactly the stereotype that career-bound college women are trying to avoid.

And of course, the drinking element is almost too obvious to mention. Most every article included calls to drink, such as a schedule for a "Van Go-Go on the Beach" that listed 10:35 a.m. to 1 p.m. as Miller Lite Party time, as well as 1:05 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. to sunrise. May I remind you that fewer than one third of college students are actually of legal drinking age?

Truly the "Beachin' Times" was almost too absurdly offensive to bother writing about. The only thing I still wonder is why you decided to risk printing such a supplement to begin with.
