Collegian Sports Writer

Penn State shot putters took third and fourth place at the Millrose Games Friday in New York City.

C.J, Hunter and Phil Karaher finished third and fourth against stiff competition at Madison Square Garden. C.J. Hunter threw 61' 9" for third place.

"I didn't throw well at all," Hunter said of his performance. "This was not a good meet for me."

Although he faced competition from Olympic silver medalist Randy Barnes, who threw 72' 7" for first place, Hunter said he was ready to throw for second place.

Phil Karaher placed fourth with a throw of 55' 5 3/4", a new personal best. Karaher is now looking foreward to next week's meet in Florida.

"I'd like to throw further than 55' 5 3/4"," Karaher said. "I'd like to hit 56 feet."

The one-mile relay team consisting of Greg Large (51.2), Jon Strange (50.8), Kevin Wiley (51.4) and Sam Harris (51.4) finished in second place in 3:24.68.

The two-mile relay team finished fourth in 2:43.78. The team featured Doug Walter (1:57.7), Chris Mills (1:56.0), Mike Castillo (1:56.1) and Mark Anderson (1:54.0).

The third-place team finished at the same time as the Penn State team, but the Lions' two-mile relay team was pushed back to fourth place, Coach Harry Groves said.

On Friday and Saturday Penn State hosted two pentathlon meets at the Greenberg Indoor Complex. On Saturday the TAC Pentathlon National Championships were held to give athletes a chance to qualify for the IC4A Championships The pentathlon consists of five events: The 55-meter hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1,000-meter run.

"It's not the kind of meet you want to run every weekend," Groves said.

An athlete needed to earn 3,600 points to qualify for the IC4A's. Eric Steenstra placed third with 3,727 points.

"The competition was good," Steenstra said. "Our biggest to qualify for IC4A's."

Ed Brown from the Santa Barbara Track Club finished in first place with 4,050 points.

Finishing in fourth and fifth place, also from Penn State, were Barry Walsh with 3,718 points and Tom Kleban with 3,601 points. Both of these Penn State athletes also qualified for the IC4A's.

On Friday, the Penn State Development Pentathlon Meet was held. Lion Erick Greffrath finished first with 3,672 points and qualified for the IC4A's. The runner-up was Lion Ricardo Hall with 3,487 points.
