After its sweep of both the one-meter and three-meter competitions two weeks ago against Villanova, the diving team displayed its skill again Saturday against LaSalle with a one-two finish in the one-meter competition by Mike Westwood and Steve Zamborsky.
Westwood raised his score to 271.20 points, a 13.8 boost from his Villanova score of 257.40 while Zamborsky took in 266.70 points.
Due to the large lead, all of the Lions' divers dove in exhibition in three-meter competition. LaSalle captured all three spots, with Cliff Johnson taking first (252.60). In exhibition, Zamborsky scored 296.17 points.
Johnson also took third place in the one-meter competition with 254.62 points. The place was both significant for Johnson and the team. Johnson had formerly competed against Zamborsky in high school state meets and U.S. diving meets, he was being recruited for Penn State before he decided to attend LaSalle.
"I was either going to go to Penn State or LaSalle, and LaSalle offered me a scholarship. I almost came to Penn State," Johnson said.
Composed of all freshmen, LaSalle's diving team knew it was going up against a more experienced team Saturday at the Natatorium.
"We have a young team," said Chris Bregere, LaSalle's diving coach. "I knew their team was more experienced than mine right now, but I thought that we could be competitive. We've come a long way, and started to put things together at the end of the season."
