Swimmen looking for 5th straight victory

Collegian Sports Writer

After crushing Villanova two weeks ago for its fourth consecutive win, the men's swimming and diving team will aim to continue its winning streak when it faces LaSalle at 1 p.m. tomorrow at McCoy Natatorium.

For the past two years, LaSalle has fallen to Penn State.

"Their team (LaSalle) is pretty typical of what they've had the last four or five years," Coach Peter Brown said. "They've got some very good people in each event."

LaSalle's top three swimmers, Jeff Gershe, Eric Buhain and Danny Ebel, will challenge the Lions in several areas. According to Brown, both Gershe, who swims the 500- and 1000-meter freestyle, and Ebel, a breaststroker, freestylist, and individual medley (I.M.) swimmer, will provide some heavy competition. Buhain will take on the Lions in the 200 I.M. and 200 butterfly.

Bill Matz, who captured first in the 200 breaststroke against Villanova, said that the team has consistently improved throughout the season.

"I think we've done pretty well. Our times have gone down a lot. Each meet we've swum better as a team," said Matz, who will compete in the 400 medley relay and 200 breaststroke.

After sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter events against Villanova, the diving team will have a tough reputation to uphold this weekend. Anxiously awaiting the meet is diver Steve Zamborsky, who will contend with a former high school competitor, Cliff Johnson.

"We're looking forward to competing against him," Zamborsky said. "(But) I'm are more competing against yourself."

Going into the meet, Brown believes the Lions (4-3) have one advantage over LaSalle.

"One thing that we've got, that they don't have, is depth," Brown said. "I'd say we're the stronger team largely on the basis of our depth."

Looking towards the Eastern Seaboard Championships in March, Brown said that the team is ahead of the point it was at last year at this time. He said that the team has improved steadily the whole season.
