Trackwomen busy with 3 meets

Collegian Sports Writer

The busiest weekend of the year for the women's indoor track team will begin today with three individual meets.

Shot-putter Kim Kessell and the two-mile relay team of Kiernan O'Toole, Teressa DiPerna, Jennifer Prutzman and Laurie Morrow will be in New York City for the Millrose Games, which includes some of the biggest names in track and field.

Tomorrow, Penn State will host the National TAC Pentathalon Championships. Penn State's Pam Connell and Deb Ford are two of the six women who qualified to participate in the championships. Former Olympian Jane Fredrick, Natalie Lew, Carla Criste and Sharon Pfister are the other four women who will compete.

"Those two (Millrose and TAC) are nationally respected meets, the best in the country," Coach Teri Jordan said. She added that the competition at the pentathalon championships should be particularly interesting.

In the meantime, the other members of the team will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., for another individual meet which includes runners from Syracuse, Penn State, Georgetown, Yale and Bucknell.

Jordan said that she hopes to see more ECAC qualifiers in the three meets this weekend.

The meet at Syracuse is of particular interest to the throwers, including 20-pound weight tosser Karen Bill.

"For the throwers it will be good competition. This is what we can expect for Easterns," she said. "I like this meet because I don't have many chances to see what (the competition) is throwing."

Bill is setting her sights on throwing 51' 0" this weekend but said she expects to break the school record of 52' 8" sometime this season.

The team will be without Leslie Lippincott and Stacy Prey this weekend. Lippincott will be out for two to three weeks with a hairline fracture and Prey is still nursing the flu.

After the National TAC Pentathlon Championships, a clinic will be held concerning the individual events in the pentathlon and the pentathlon itself. The clinic, which is free and open to the public, will feature Jane Fredrick and others, including World Cup Head Coach Rich Torrellas. Coach Jordan said that those attending will get an opportunity to participate in the different events. It should begin around 2:30.
