Healthy Loving Week looks at relationships

Collegian Science Writer

The director of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England will kick off the University's Healthy Loving Week Monday with a program called "Intimacy in AIDies" in the HUB Fishbowl.

Jay Friedman will participate in activities on Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the HUB Fishbowl. Friedman, also a disc jockey, will use music and videos to convey the message of healthy loving.

He will discuss "How to Negotiate a Good Sex Life" at 7 Monday night in HUB Assembly Hall.

The fourth annual Healthy Loving Week, Feb. 6-13, is sponsored by the Office of Health Promotion and Education and University Health Service.

"Healthy Loving Week includes programs and activities which focus on the positive aspects of relationships such as communication, equality, sexual health and ethics, diversity issues and taking care of one's self," said Elaine Jurs, co-chairwoman for Healthy Loving Week and assistant director of the Office of Health Promotion and Education.

"Friedman's presentation will be a good kickoff to the week. It will be very positive," she said

Richard P. Keeling, president of the American College Health Association and director of Student Health Services for the University of Virginia, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 about "AIDS on Campus: It's Your Concern Too."

Keeling has treated and counseled students with AIDS and people infected with the AIDS virus.

Jurs said the big differences in this year's program from past years are the two out-of-town guest speakers and Healthy Loving Day.

Leonard Jack, Jr., co-chairman for Healthy Loving Week and coordinator of the Sexual Health Awareness Resource Program, said when planning for the event organizers did not want to weigh heavily on one thing, but wanted a diversity of subject areas.

The Rev. Anne Ard, campus minister with the United Ministry at Penn State, will present a panel discussion on the religious aspects involved with relationships. "The Last Temptation? Religious Perspectives on Loving Relationships" will be presented at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the HUB Fishbowl.

Jack will lead a panel discussion entitled "Addiction to Love: How to Recognize It, What to Do" Thurs., Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the HUB Assembly Hall. Five professionals who have dealt with students concerning relationship problems and some who deal with drug and alcohol addiction will participate in the panel.

Jack said the panel will discuss what is love and what is love addiction as well as strategies for those who think they are addicted to love and resources and materials on campus.

Jurs said she would like students to realize they can have a more positive feeling about relationships.

"There are things students can learn and practice to incorporate into their behaviors to have better relationships," she said.
