Something different is happening in the basement of Carnegie building every Sunday night.

A new film series, appropriately titled The Carnegie Hall Film Series, began last week and will continue throughout the semester.

With the theme, "From the Edge / On the Edge: Screenings of American Indedpendents and Film Noir," the series offers two free screenings every Sunday night in room 4.

The split in theme provides for a more diverse audience, according to George Yatchisin, director of the series. In the same evening, one can pay homage to a classic oldie and a critically acclaimed film from the cutting edge.

Yatchisin commented that the series will appeal to a pre-established film community that exists in both University Park as well as State College.

"This will round out the film selections that aren't coming downtown or on campus," he said.

The films in this semester's series are free, and Yatchisin is hopeful that they will continue to be so in the future.

"We're not out to make money," he said.

The film noir selections spotlighted this semester also tie in with one of the School of Communication's classes. This helped shape the theme this semester; however, Yatchisin is hopeful that the program and its funding will grow with each subsequent semester.

"Sometime in the future it [the series] may be totally separate from classes," Yatchisin said.

This week's selections are The Scenic Route and The Killers. The former is from director Mark Rappaport and tells the story of a love triangle between two sisters and the man they both love. The latter, from director Robert Siodmak, is an adaption of a Hemmingway story and deals with the murder of an ex-fighter.
