The mascot looks like a cross between Dick Tracy and Clark Kent, evoking images of words like "Blat," "Flam" and "Ker-plunk."
The band is Jim Thackery and the Assassins, which will be appearing at Cafe 210 West tonight. The show will start at approximately 9:30, according to Mark Ross, guitarist for Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band, which will open the show.
The Assassins' musical style has been described as ranging from "gritty Chicago Blues and Texas Shuffles, to powerful urban soul and funk, to the distinctive music of New Orleans and the American south."
The band's album Partners in Crime won the "Best Blues LP" award at the 1987 Washington Area Music Association Awards (the Wammies).
Jim Thackery, who plays the guitar and sings, joined the Assassins after a 14-year stint with the Nighthawks. His guitar style is bluesy and full of rock 'n roll.
Bassist Wade Matthews has worked with Bill Cosby, Joan Rivers and Jennifer Holiday. He is also the band's music director.
Tom Lepson helps out with additional guitar and vocals and Alex Holland handles the alto and tenor saxophone as well vocals. Holland has a reputation as an animated performer. He has worked with members of Muddy Waters' band.
Bruce Harrison, who plays piano and synthesizers, won the Grand Prize at the 1987 Mid-Atlantic Songwriters' Festival, for his composition "Duke's Mood."
Drummer Brian Alpert publishes his writings in Modern Drummer and has played with the Chicago Blues and has done the sound effects for The Red Skelton Show.
