Keep out mystery
I always enjoy Hugh Taylor's witty and entertaining columns, but I have to disagree with him on preserving the dignity of the Presidency. Sure, there's a limit to everything when it comes to conduct, but seeing the President having fun only makes him more of a human being, and also keeps him from taking himself too seriously -- which is what the system of the judicial and legislative branches are meant to do in a business way, anyway. People know that the Royal Family is on a higher social level, and so they demand exceptional rules of conduct for them. But it's possible to look at the First Family and say to yourself, "If I found out I made it to the White House, I might do something dippy to celebrate, too!" (or, "I don't mind having a jam session now and then -- why can't he?") I say, keep the mystery out of the Presidency -- he's not royal, after all. I think the idea of Bush with a guitar is just downright funny! And even though I might be falling for a public relations program hook, line and sinker, I still wouldn't want him in a position where he was above reproach. Geraldine Novosel
