School Board member won't run for 11th term

Collegian Staff Writer

Kay Rossi, who has served on the State College Area School Board for 10 years, has decided not to seek a fourth term.

"It's time to move on," Rossi said, adding that she wants to be able to devote more time to the various volunteer organizations with which she is involved.

Rossi has served as director of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind's Centre County satellite since its beginning in 1984, said Donna Pierce, the satellite's office manager.

Rossi said she plans to be actively involved in a radio reading project for the elderly and visually impaired.

"I'd like to spearhead that project in Centre County," Rossi said, noting that the program will provide services to many people.

Rossi said she also will continue to put her energies into the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, as well as participating in the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board and the State College Community Theatre.

She said she also has been involved with providing transportation to the voting polls for senior citizens, in addition to organizing special shopping days at the Nittany Mall for the elderly.

Rossi calls the time she served on the State College Area School Board "a wonderful experience."

William Moyer, who is completing his second term on the board, said members will miss Rossi's input, experience and background. Moyer said Rossi's special insight regarding student concerns has made her a valuable member of the board.

"(Rossi) has been a very good board member," said Richard Bunnell, who has served the school board for 26 years.

"I guess I've always respected her ability to size up a situation," Bunnell said. "It's a good trait in any board member."

So far, four school board seats are open for this year's elections.

Joseph Filko, who has served on the board since 1983, said last month he was not going to seek re-election.

Donna Queeney, a State College resident, announced her candidacy at a news conference Jan. 11. Moyer, who was elected president of the school board last December said recently that he is seeking re-election to the seat.

Members of the school board serve four year terms. Primary elections will be held May 16.
