The local community has responded to the veterans' needs as they try to resume their lives in the wake of the Friday night fire that burned down the Veterans House and left 21 homeless.

After more than a year of suggestions and recommendations, State College Borough Council members, staff and planners agreed Monday night to search for a consultant to help bring to life the borough's "ambience report."

The observance of Black History Month begins today with the live satellite showing of "Beyond the Dream: A Celebration of Black History," the first in a series of events celebrating the history of black people.

The Interfraternity Council Dance Marathon is looking for about 26 willing feet.

The Undergraduate Student Government Senate debated the validity of a resolution it passed last semester regarding the position of budget committee representative.

Professors are the best sources for graduate school information, said Elizabeth Shirey, a counselor at the University's Career Development and Placement Center.

Representatives of two local used book stores say their stores are finding a niche in the student market that major bookstores are unable to fill.

Drought reduced corn and hay yields in Centre County by as much as 50 percent in some cases, but the county's $35 million agricultural industry escaped significant losses during 1988, agricultural experts say.

A small crowd gathered on the steps of Boucke yesterday to quietly protest the University's treatment of two students facing possible dismissal or suspension from the University for participating in November's anti-CIA protest.

After five hours of deliberation at a University Hearing Board session, two University students defended their actions during last November's CIA recruitment protest, but officials tabled the hearing due to time constraints.

Festivities for the 1989 Interfraternity Council Dance Marathon officially begin Thursday when guests gather for the Kickoff Dinner at the Penn State Sheraton, 240 S. Pugh St.

Jim Martin is a man of few words. His accomplishments, however, speak loud and clear -- defending national champion at 126 pounds and a 3.96 grade point average in pre-medicine, a combination that earned Martin GTE Academic All-American of the Year honors last fall.

Competing in Rec Hall is often a difficult assignment for a freshman gymnast. Crowds that may grow to 2,000 can be overwhelming, many upperclassmen have claimed. Adapting to this new environment often takes time for a new gymnast.

Two years ago the football team celebrated its 100th anniversary. This weekend the entire Penn State women's athletic program kicks off a celebration marking the 25th year of its existence.
