Lambert, Phillips spark lady cagers

Collegian Sports Writer

Lisa Lambert and Kathy Phillips combined for 41 points Saturday to lead the women's basketball team past to a 104-64 rout of St. Bonaventure.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Penn State and raised its record to 7-10 (5-4 in the Atlantic 10) while the Lady Bonnies fell to 7-11 (0-9 in conference play).

In Lambert and Phillips, the Lady Lions have two players on opposite ends of their collegiate careers. This is the last season for Lambert, the team captain and the only senior on the squad. Phillips is one of four freshmen on the team, a piece of the foundation for Penn State basketball teams to come.

But right now Lambert and Phillips have similar, thankless roles on the team. Both players come off the bench, playing only 10 or 15 minutes a game. Both are expected to play tough defense and pull down rebounds, scrapping and fighting for every missed shot.

Any contribution made on the offensive end from Lambert and Phillips is just icing on the cake, just something extra. But both Lambert and Phillips gave something extra against St. Bonaventure Saturday night, as both players turned in the best performances of their careers.

Phillips, a 6-3 center from Southfield, Mich., made her first career start in place of the injured Adrie DeVries. She made the most of her opportunity, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Phillips played 32 minutes against the Lady Bonnies, the most of any Lady Lion. Before Saturday's game Phillips' previous scoring high came against Syracuse on Dec. 6, when she scored eight points.

"I feel like I came in and played well," Phillips said. "With Adrie being out I knew I had to come in and do well. I was relaxed ad I went out there and I went out and played what I could play."

Lambert poured in 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds while playing only 19 minutes. Before Saturday's game Lambert's career high was 10 points, a mark she shattered while playing less that half the game against the Lady Bonnies.

"I was definitely open," Lambert said. "I think it was the fact that we ran the offense well. We ran it well, that was why I was open, and once you're wide open you can't help but put it in."

"Lisa knows her job off the bench is to rebound and to make things happen," Coach Rene Portland said. "The 18-point career-effort was an added bonus for us tonight. St. Bonaventure was keying on Susan Robinson, and that left the post area open for Lisa and Kathy, and they responded well."

Not bad for two players who usually take two or three shots per game. Phillips came into the game averaging 3.9 points per game and 3.6 rebounds; Lambert was averaging 3.8 points and 4.2 rebounds.

Like the rest of the team, Lambert and Phillips did most of their damage from the free throw line. Lambert hit eight of nine attempts, and Phillips was a perfect nine for nine. The Lady Lions as a team shot an incredible 35 of 38 from the stripe, a 92.1 percent clip.

"We've been shooting pretty well lately," Lambert said. "We work really hard on it. We shoot a lot of free throws in practice, so it's something that we definitely said we have to be in control of."

Freshman sensation Susan Robinson had another typical all-around game, as she continues to establish herself as a top candidate for A-10 Freshman of the Year honors. Robinson contributed 24 points, 16 rebounds and five steals.

Although Portland was impressed with Robinson's performance, she expressed concern at Robinson's recent propensity for getting into foul trouble. The freshman picked up four fouls for the second consecutive game.
