Student reports assault at local fraternity house

A University student told authorities he was beaten up early Saturday at a local fraternity, borough police said.

John Schano, 18, 511 Pinchot, told the State College Bureau of Police Services he was bumped by a man at Phi Sigma Delta Sigma fraternity, 240 E. Prospect Ave., while he walked up the stairs of the house. An argument ensued, police said, and five to six men reportedly attacked Schano.

Schano sustained a variety of cuts and bruises to his scalp, and two tufts of his hair were reportedly pulled out during the fight, police said. He was treated at University Health Services in Ritenour Health Center.

Accident in Boggs Twp. kills Pleasant Gap man.

A Pleasant Gap man was killed early Saturday morning when a pickup truck he was riding in crashed and burned on Township Road 452 in Boggs Township, Rockview state police said.

Vance Anthony Alterio, 25, died Saturday morning of multiple trauma injuries, Centre County Coroner Robert Neff said yesterday.

Neff pronounced him dead at the scene at 3 a.m.

Lester Walk Jr., 21, of Milesburg, driver of the truck, was listed as serious yesterday at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, a spokesman for the hospital said.

Rockview state police said the crash occurred about 2:15 a.m. as Walk was traveling southbound on state road 150. Walk's 1987 Ford pickup crossed the highway, struck a curb, flipped over and rolled to a stop on its roof against a pole on Route 452, state police said.

Neither was wearing a seatbelt and both were thrown from the truck, police reported.

Walk's truck caught fire and was destroyed after the crash, police said. Milesburg Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the fire.

Attempted rape reported behind Atherton Street

A State College woman was reportedly assaulted Saturday night in the 100 block of H Alley, authorities said yesterday.

State College Bureau of Police Services officers said the woman, whom they would not identify, was walking alone sometime after 11 p.m. in H Alley behind the Imperial Inn, 118 S. Atherton St., when a car began to follow her. An unidentified white male reportedly got out of the car and threw the woman to the ground, police said.

The woman fled after managing to escape her attacker, police said.

Police are calling the incident an attempted rape, but would not release further information.

Rockview prisoner bites state corrections officer

A corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview was reportedly assaulted Thursday night while moving an inmate from his cell, state police said.

John R. Jae, 28, allegedly bit Officer Frederick E. Mosely on the hand and then spit on him when Mosely attempted to move Jae from his cell into a restricted housing unit of the facility, Rockview state police said.

Police are investigating the incident and say charges against Jae are pending.

Authorities cite fraternity after wood theft reported

Police cited a local fraternity last week after a borough resident charged that members took a half-cord of wood from his house sometime between Jan. 7 and 14, State College police said.

Paul Bredeson, 231 E. Hamilton Ave., told police he identified wood from his torn-down shed and trees from his yard while he was walking by Phi Sigma Delta Sigma fraternity, 240 E. Prospect Ave.

Police cited the organization for criminal mischief.

The fraternity house, located near the rear of Bredeson's house, had the wood in a pile on the west side of its house, police said.

Bredeson said he called police after attempting to reach the fraternity's house phone, individual members and the Interfraternity Council. He received no response from anyone, he said.

The wood is valued at $30.

Fairmount Avenue wreck injures borough residents

Two State College residents were injured Saturday during a two-car collision at the intersection of South Pugh Street and Fairmount Avenue, authorities said.

Charlotte B. Fisher, 65,1117 William St., and Byron R. Parizek, 16, 751 McKee St., were treated and released from Centre Community Hospital Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

CORRECTION: This article incorrectly described an accident at Fairmount Avenue and Sough Pugh Street. Byron R. Parizek 16, 751 McKee St., was cited for failing to stop for a stop sign on Jan 28, not Charlotte B. Fisher, 65, 1117 William St.

Police said the crash occurred about noon after Fisher, who was traveling west on Fairmount Avenue, failed to stop for a stop sign and struck Parizek, who was eastbound on South Pugh Street.

Fisher was cited for failing to stop for the stop sign, police said.

University Terrace window smashed during fistfight

A $350 window was smashed Friday night during a fist fight at the University Terrace Apartments, 925 Bellaire Ave., local authorities said.

John Fowler's window was broke when two unidentified men engaged in a confrontation in front of his residence, State College Bureau of Police Services reported.

Fowler told police one of the men took a swing at the other man after an argument. The man ducked the blow and his assailant's fist crashed through Fowler's window, police said.

Both men escaped on foot after the incident.

Bellefonte man injured when truck strikes rock

A Bellefonte man sustained minor injuries early yesterday morning after he lost control of his pickup truck on State Road 144 in Spring Township and struck a large rock, authorities reported.

Alan R. O'Rourke, 32, was treated and released yesterday from Centre Community Hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Rockview state police said O'Rourke lost control of his truck a few minutes after midnight yesterday as he was rounding a curve on Route 144. The truck crossed the southbound lane and struck a rock in the yard of a nearby house, police said.

O'Rourke's truck rolled onto its right side after striking the rock, police said.

Bellefonte man arrested, charged in theft at Sears

A Bellefonte man was arrested Friday afternoon after he allegedly attempted to take a car stereo system and speakers from SearsRoebuck in the Nittany Mall, the State College Bureau of Police Services reported.

Jon Homan, 28 of RD1 Bellefonte was charged with retail theft Friday, police said.

The stereo system is valued at $149.

Weekend license thefts hit Porter Hall area lots

Five license plates were stolen from cars parked in University lots Saturday and early Sunday morning.

An unidentified person removed the registration plate and car emblem from a car owned by Robert Spanier, 605 Beaver, while it was parked in Lot Blue G Saturday near Porter Hall, University police said.

Ed Evans, 1963 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington, Mass., reported the theft of a license plate from his car while it was parked in Lot Nittany Silver Saturday morning at 10, police said.

Marce Pancio, 5 Porter, reported the theft of a license plate valued at $40, from his car Saturday afternoon at 4:21, police said. The car was parked in Lot Blue G near Porter Hall, police said.

A license plate was reported taken from a vehicle owned by Elizabeth Dutter, 211 Wolf, Saturday evening at 8, police said. Dutter's car was parked in Lot Blue G, police said.

Christopher Leo, 1810 Fireside Lane, Cherry Hill, N.J., reported the theft of a front license plate valued at $25 from his car Sunday morning at 12:01, while it was parked in Lot Blue G, police said.
