Some Council of Commonwealth Student Governments representatives this weekend questioned the University's commitment to backing its stated priorities with funding.
As examples they pointed to inadequate student facilities at Commonwealth campuses.
Ron Fischer, Ogontz Student Government Association president, said the third floor of one building at Ogontz is closed because the fire escape does not reach it.
Mont Alto students do not have a gym facility, CCSG's University Board of Trustees representative Brian Donaldson said.
"In the 1970s, there was no capital budget and only in the last several years has funding been released for Commonwealth campuses," Acting Vice President and Dean of Commonwealth Campuses Richard Grubb said.
Gov. Robert P. Casey signed a budget bill in October approving funding for 35 University projects throughout the state, but the University must wait for the money to be released.
Some of the Commonwealth campus projects are:
-- A learning center at Beaver Campus -- $2.8 million.
-- Land for expansion at Berks Campus -- $5.5 million.
-- A classroom building at Delaware Campus -- $4 million.
-- Renovations to buildings at Ogontz Campus -- $4.5 million.
-- A library at Schulkyll Campus --$1.6 million.
"Facilities for Commonwealth campuses are funded in three ways -- the state, gifts and a minor percentage by University funds," Grubb said.
