East Halls Times
University students to publish area newsletter

Collegian Staff Writer

Look out Philadelphia Inquirer. Move over The New York Times. Here comes the East Halls Times.

Student leaders and residents from East Halls have decided to publish a newsletter designed to promote area pride, address student concerns and make residents aware of the benefits of living in the biggest dorm complex on campus, said East Halls President Robyn Walls.

"We want to let the students know that there are things going on in East," Walls said. "We want to promote East Halls as a great place to live and we want to get people involved."

The East Halls Times will report on upcoming programs, concerts, news events and student government decisions affecting the area, Walls said.

The first issue will be published within two weeks and will have a special section with letters from the five area executives, Walls said. Residents should know that student representatives are present and working for the students, she said, adding that all six committee chairs will address area residents in the second issue.

"We thought it might be a way to let the students of East Halls know about the residence association and get people more involved in (East Residence Association) itself," said Suzanne Bowen, vice president of East Halls.

About 10 people work on the volunteer paper now, but Bowen said the association encourages all area residents to contribute. She hopes the paper will make the people aware of how the association is working for the residents of East Halls.

The three- to four-page newsletter will also provide a forum for student concerns about issues relevant to campus life such as the dining halls, smoking policy and the condition of the residence halls, Walls said.

The paper will publicize clubs and organizations that operate for East Halls residents, she said. In addition, the paper will be selling personals to the residents and publishing house news, Walls added.

The association hopes to publish the issue every two or three weeks, distributing more than 2,000 copies in area mailboxes.

Funding for the newsletter will come from the student-run East Residence Association.
