[ Monday, Jan. 23, 1989 ] Letter to the Editor
Uniformed opinion
This letter is in response to (Chino Wilson's) silly (column) about the drug problem printed in the January 18 Collegian. I can't believe you major in journalism and you are this sloppy and uninformed in your (column). First, just because a Times poll indicated that 16 percent of people polled said drugs are our number one problem doesn't mean it is our number one problem. Any creditable economist or political leader can tell you the deficit is a bigger problem. Second, the strategy of a federal "war" on drugs has been proven wrong, just plain wrong, for the past eight years. Where have you been? Third, your proposed solutions are neither sound nor plausible, but merely asinine. Bomb the fields in drug producing countries? Jesus, next you'll want to bomb Rondonia, or better yet, the whole Amazon Basin. Do you have any idea what's going on in Central and South America? As a student, maybe you don't have time to really explore the issues, Mr. Wilson, or maybe you really are simple minded enough to believe the neo-Reaganite crap that you wrote. But as a journalist, if you can't even lie well, at least have the integrity to print a blank page. Mark Hastings
