Pi Kappa Alpha accepts calendar applications

Collegian Staff Writer

Women students who occasionally like to hang around may have a chance to do just that. On someone's wall, that is.

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is accepting applications until February for the next Pika-Penn State calendar, said Norm Buggel, the fraternity's calendar chairman.

"We're looking for good-looking people -- the overall collegiate look," said Jennifer Shea (junior-journalism), one of the fraternity's little sisters. "There are so many naturally beautiful girls on campus."

Pi Kappa Alpha, 417 E. Prospect Ave., is donating all profits from the calendar to the Centre County Youth Service Bureau's Big Brother-Big Sister program, Buggel said.

"It's not like we're trying to flaunt out some bodies," he said. "We're trying for the cute look rather than the seductive look."

Any woman can apply whether or not she has modeling experience, Buggel said. Applications are available at the HUB desk or the fraternity.

This year's organizers for the calendar are working for a more professional look, said Pat Kelly (junior-landscape architecture), who designs the graphics for the calendar.

Part of that look will include a more consistent style throughout the calendar and more attention to detail in the poses, Shea said.

This year, planners hope not only to improve upon past editions, but also to make a profit with the 1989-90 calendar, Buggel said. The last two calendars made only enough money to pay for the next year's calendar, Buggel said. Poor planning and insufficient help have created complications in the past, Shea said. Also, last year's calendar was distributed to the book stores late because of printing problems, she added.

The calendar is intended to be representative of women at the University, Shea said, adding that many of the women who model for it do so to feel a part of the University.

Letters and applications have been sent out to all of the sororities on campus, in an effort to reach the Greek community, Buggel said.

Getting in touch with women outside of the Greek system can be difficult, Buggel said, but he has tried to contact other students through ads in The Daily Collegian.

"I tried out to gain more confidence and to belong to something," said Lisa Hector (junior-political science). Hector, an independent, said people she dealt with were friendly, but had a "definite Greek bias."

The applications ask for modeling experience, as well as activities and interests. Past chairmen told Buggel that "some girls really crack under pressure," he said. Shea agreed, but added that modeling experience helped the women relax in front of the camera.

Kim Scott (junior-business administration) a Pi Kappa Alpha little sister, said she enjoyed modeling for last year's calendar.

"Pika's calendar was the most tasteful of all the student calendars here," she said.

All of the photos which Pi Kappa Alpha chooses to use in their calendar must be approved by the University Office of Licensing and by the Interfraternity Council before they are published, said Buggel. He said the calendar is not offensive to women.
