Letter to the Editor
One of many
Bill Cahir's editorial of January 16, "One of Many", held special interest for me. I am one of the many women raped in Penn State last year. I did not know the rapist. I did not provoke the attack. I was followed to my apartment, forced inside, and repeatedly raped by one man. The police found me beaten unconscious after three hours of physical and mental torture. As you can imagine, I appreciate the effort to bring the issue of rape at Penn State into the open. Forewarned is forearmed. I am, however, hurt and disappointed with the common thought that rape and fraternities fit like hand and glove. I realize that some of these horror stories occur at fraternities, but my story was quite the opposite. A fraternity brother helped me survive that worst experience of my life. When his "brothers" found out, they did all they could to comfort me. I am hurt by now seeing the men who helped me to recover being lumped together with the type of men described in Cahir's article. I'm tired of people making it sound like fraternities are a breeding ground or a school for rapists. Taking the risk of being alone with a brother or brothers of a house is the same as risking going with someone to his apartment. It's not the scene of the crime that should get the blame. Fraternities are not the only place where rapes occur; they unfortunately just get most of the publicity. They don't deserve this. Places don't rape; people do. When those brothers reached out to help me, it renewed my trust and my faith. I even lived at their house for a while. It was a place where I felt close to men again, a place where I felt cared about and safe . . . a real "Shelter". I still thank them for all that they have done for me. Name withheld
