Letter to the Editor
Use the sidewalk
I am a returning adult full-time student at Penn State. I am also a student with disabilities and because of those disabilities, I have a special parking permit which allows me to park in various lots on campus close to my classes. Like all students, I have a limited time to get from one class to another. But unlike most students, I must go to my car, move it to the other side of campus for my next class, park my car and get to the building where my next class is held. Plus, I must wait for elevators to the top floor because four flights of steps are very hard to climb for people with disabilities. The point I'm making is leading up to a few simple reminders for all walking students: 1. Please use sidewalks; they are there for you to use. 2. Try to avoid walking through the middle of parking lots when sidewalks are available. You only put yourself at risk for exiting cars. 3. Please, please don't walk in the middle of exit roads from the parking lots to the main roads. There is lots of sidewalk space and I am just as much in a hurry to get to my next class as you are. And I don't wish to take pot shots at inconsiderate University students. 4. If you are a student without special parking and decide to risk it and park on campus anyway, the spaces you occupy take away from those who really need those spaces. Students with disabilities are then forced to park further away which physically makes it harder and more strenuous to get to classes. This letter also includes a note of thanks and appreciation for the little acts of kindness some students have given (i.e. opening doors). I, for one, appreciate it. Pamela J. Smith
