Business fraternities to hold rush mixer at HUB

Collegian Staff Writer

Five business fraternities -- Alpha Kappa Psi, Delta Sigma Pi, Phi Beta Lambda, Phi Chi Theta and Phi Gamma Nu -- are holding a rush mixer at 7 tonight in the HUB Fishbowl.

"It's for people not sure of what fraternities to rush," said Kathy Hilbert, president of Phi Gamma Nu.

The mixer will acquaint men and women with the fraternities, Hilbert explained, attracting more of a business-oriented audience than the Interfraternity Council's rush. Students should find it easier to narrow their choices, she added.

The five fraternity presidents are also organizing a Business Fraternity Council to govern their organizations, said Mark Woytowich, president of Delta Sigma Pi. The council's bylaws are awaiting Undergraduate Student Government Supreme Court approval, he said.

The council will act as a united body of business fraternities, Hilbert said, adding that the fraternity presidents hope that combining their resources will improve communication, promote ideals and provide a support base.

Two of the fraternities -- Phi Gamma Nu and Phi Beta Lambda -- are open to all students, while the remaining three are limited to College of Business Administration students.

Jeff Pedowitz, president of Phi Beta Lambda, said although fraternity leaders had previously thought of forming such a council, the idea was not acted upon until last semester.

"It will provide a better network of support for each other," Pedowitz said.

The council will consist of two delegates from each fraternity and an executive council, he said.

A committee including Ronald Koot, assistant dean of Undergraduate Programs for the College of Business Administration, and Nancy Robinson, assistant to the College of Business Administration Student Organizations, will appoint the first executive council, Pedowitz said.

Executive council appointments cannot be made until the council is completely organized and approved by the USG Supreme Court, Robinson said, adding that applications and interviews will help in officer selection.

The fraternities will elect future executive officers, Pedowitz said.

Plans for the council -- including finding an office and scheduling social events -- are underway, he said, adding, "It will be very successful and beneficial, not just for us but for the community as well."
