Panhel to hold election

Collegian Staff Writer

Panhellenic Council is now accepting applications and scheduling interviews for its 1989-90 Executive Council.

Ten women sit on the council, which serves as the group's governing body.

Both elected and appointed positions are available, said Panhel Adviser Andrea Dowhower.

President, vice president for council development, treasurer and secretary are elected posts, while appointed positions include rush coordinator, administrative assistant, vice president for operations, as well as public relations, judicial board and chapter programs chairwomen, Dowhower said.

Nominations began last night and will extend until Panhel's Jan. 16 meeting, she said, noting that candidates will make campaign speeches during the meeting, with an election board posing questions following their addresses. Elections will be held Jan. 30.

Candidates for elected positions must fill out applications and receive nominations at one of the group's upcoming meetings. Candidates for president and vice president must also visit each of the 23 member sororities.

"It gives sororities a chance to talk to you to see where you stand on certain subjects," Dowhower said.

Women interested in taking one of the appointed positions must fill out applications and schedule interviews with the new president, vice president and adviser, she said. Appointments will be made following the elections.

Candidates for Panhel president must have previous experience as president of a sorority or as an executive council member, Dowhower said. Also, the president and vice president must belong to different sororities and members of one sorority cannot hold the same office for two consecutive years.

Current Vice President for Council Development Connie Rae Sabo said interviewers during last year's election process proved to be very accommodating.

"Everyone was very receptive to the whole idea," Sabo said, adding that she deems her term as a Panhel officer a worthwhile experience.

"There is no reason to be nervous," said Rush Coordinator Tara Goff, adding that the interviews are short and informal.

Executive Council applications may be picked up and turned in at 203-B HUB. Election applications are due Jan. 13. Appointed applications are due Jan. 27.
